SCHOOLS SHOULD STICK TO THE THREE R'S

A Portland Maine middle school has decided to hand out birth control pills to middle schoolers. We are talking 11-13 year olds here. I have 10 year old twins. Condoms have already been available since 2000 to students at the same school who have parental permission to be treated at the health center. But, receiving the actual birth control is confidential. This is a bad idea. Parents in the end are responsible for their children’s health and the schools should stick with the 3 R’s. That’s plenty of responsibility. Yes, we can send a message to our children to Just say No – and then believe in them that they can and will say no. Handing out contraception just sends a mixed message to kids.

That's wild. I'm all for educating kids about what sex and birth control is, but this seems to go bit far. My only thought as a former teacher is I wonder if the school has decided that there are too many kids with parents who fail to step in and guide their kid in that part of their lives, so the school is just doing what it thinks is necessary.

that is an interesting thought on the topic, and part of my main complaint is that they are actually handing them a prescription drug, yes, birth control pills are prescription. . .seems like you can barely get a band aid or aspirin without a note from mom, yet alone contraception -
thanks for writing

I was sent a link to your post from a commenter. I have the same issues with this idea. Not to mention, if I, at 23 and married for years, have to see an OB to get a script for birth control, why is my 13 year old an exception?
BAD IDEA!!!

Hi Heather - thanks for writing and yes, so true. And in the case of the child, we, the parent are the responsible ones. . .we are the ones who love and care for the ultimate good of our children...
